Re: Getting hit in the face.

Cass headbutt
Although it wasn't bothering me when I went to sleep yesterday, my left eye has been kind of sore all day today. Somewhat light-sensitive, too. The bruise under my left eyelid has changed from a nickel-sized blue spot to a purple and red semicircle under the whole eye. That could make things awkward at work tomorrow night.

It all started Monday night, a couple hours after I got back from going to see some (not very good) bands play in Fremont with some friends in what was not exactly a celebration of my birthday. One of my friends and I went to the pizza place on the corner for something to eat. There were some belligerant drunk frat-boy types there, harrassing everybody and trying to pick a fight. Attempts to talk them down proved futile. When they started getting physically aggressive, I started dialing 911. I got hit the first time because I was calling the police. It was annoying, but didn't do any damage. I got hit the second time by a different guy because I'd pinned the guy who hit me the first time against the wall with my forearm across his throat. I would also categorize that one as mostly annoying. Somewhat later I got hit the third time, by the first guy again, because I was pulling him off my friend who the two of them were trying to pummel. That one actually hurt, and gave me this black eye. The police showed up around this time.

Anyway, we're pressing charges against those assholes, and the security camera and employees at the pizza place will back up our side of the story. I hate that shit like this happens in my neighborhood. I hate that these people think that they can get drunk and do whatever the fuck they want and it doesn't have consequences.

I haven't been in a fight in a long time. I've determined that I'm pretty rusty. And they're not any more fun with age.

DUDE. Eye doctor. This week!

(And happy belated birthday!)

That seems like overkill for a black eye. It feels a lot better today. The bruise has turned an interesting magenta color.

(Thanks! It was a pretty decent one, up until that point.)

Ah, okay. (The whole "light sensitive" thing triggers a bit of paranoia in me. Okay, a lot of paranoia -- I had some "light sensitivity" a year or so back, and it led to me not being able to see anything but a grey mist through my right eye for more than a month, plus corticosteroid drops.) I'm glad you're feeling better. :)

I hate that these people think that they can get drunk and do whatever the fuck they want and it doesn't have consequences.

Entitlement. It's becoming epidemic.

Thanks. And thanks for the concern. :-)

The light sensitivity didn't last very long, thankfully. It did cause me and my friend (with our matching black eyes) to cancel our plans to go to burner potluck and instead hang around my place watching anime and drinking hard cider trying to relax that night, however. The eye's not sore anymore (although the skin around it is a little bit when I blink) and the bruise has shifted to a dark red in the middle with yellow around the edges, which means it should fade soon.

(Paranoia, that I understand well. That sounds like an awful experience. I'm glad you recovered.)

I really can't stand people who think that if they have some alcohol in them, it provides an excuse to be an asshole. Or people who think that it's okay to use physical violence to satisfy their pride.

Aren't you a security guard? Aren't you supposed to know how to fight so you can defend yourself if someone tries to break in or something?

And they're not any more fun with age.
You're 27! It's not like you're in your late forties.

I'm sorry, that last reply came out sounding too insulting.

I was just a little shocked that you were complaining about the fight and your physical condition, considering what you do for a living.

What I do for a living is usually pretty quiet. In two and a half years at this job, I've never had somebody take a swing at me while working. People get confrontational sometimes, but they also fear the authority that they think the uniform represents. I try to always be prepared at work for the person who won't (and I've been face to face with some crazies), but if they did attack me it would be an unusual occurrence.

Anyway, I wasn't working. I was getting pizza! Fifty fucking feet from my own apartment! And it wasn't a crazy homeless person, it was a couple of drunk college-age assholes. Shit like this pisses me off.

Security guards aren't supposed to fight. They're supposed to be visible so people decide to go elsewhere, to convince people hanging around to leave with their appearance of authority, and to call the police if anything happens.

What I know about how to fight comes from taking martial arts when I was younger. I stopped when I went off to college nine years ago, so I'm way out of practice.

Really, I'm a little embarassed that I got caught off guard three times and wasn't blocking anything, but these guys were pretty ineffectual. The only one that actually hurt me was because he by blind luck got me right in the eye, and I was still up and ready to keep fighting, and my friend only had a black eye less impressive than mine after their repeated attempts to double-team and pummel him and was pretty much fine.

I was going pretty easy on these guys, too, and spent more time trying to defuse the situation than actually fighting. I'm a bit annoyed with myself because I decided years ago that my policy would be that once violence began, I would go all out and operate under the assumption that my life was on the line, but that wasn't what I did. I just couldn't view these guys as a real threat. After the first one hit me and knocked the phone out of my hand, I shoved him against the wall and tried to make him understand that he was making a serious mistake (he was taller, but I had him outmassed by a fair margin) and he needed to back down. Instead of putting my hand on his throat while I pinned him to the wall, I could have struck him in the throat, but then I might be explaining a corpse to the police right now. Instead of putting my forearm across his neck while pushing him into the wall, I could have used it to elbow strike him across the face a few dozen times. Even after the second guy hit me, I was basically ignoring that (like) and telling him that him and his friend needed to get lost or they were going to get in trouble. I passed up a couple of easy chances to take shots at their spines from behind, too, in favor of "gentler" methods. After the hit in the eye I was pretty pissed off, so I probably would have started attacking for real if the cops hadn't shown up. I can't decide if it was the right choice or not. As it is nobody got seriously hurt and we're not in any legal trouble. But it could have gotten ugly, and I can't help but think that I should have gotten serious sooner.

Anyway, that was my stupid misadventure for the week... how're things over there? Started watching Noir yet?

Things for me are decent. No pointless violence, but I have had to deal with a drunken idiot, one of my own co-workers, who got caught stealing a beer out of a customers refrigerator, lied about doing it to the boss, and then kept acting like I ratted him out. I didn't, but I probably would have if he didn't get caught in the act by the customer herself.

As for Noir, I havn't had a chance to start watching it yet. Maybe sometime this weekend or maybe on Monday. When I start watching it I'll let you know.

That sounds like a pain in the ass. Why, oh why, is there always one idiot stupid enough to steal from the job site and then act surprised when he gets caught? Who did he think they were going to suspect? A team of beer-stealing ninjas?

Beer-stealing Ninjas... hrm... If there were such a thing they probably wouldn't be very good ninjas. They'd be so drunk that they'd never be able to do all their kung-fu or back flipping properly, and would probably never hit anything with their ninja swords or throwing stars.

But yeah... It's a well known fact that this guy likes his brewskies, and drinks them a little too much. I'm starting to think this guy might need an intervention, but I'm not sure how many of my co-workers would back me up on that.

Well, see, they only launch ninja missions to steal beer when they're out of beer and thus sober. Or possibly hung-over, which will make them want to keep the noise to even more of a minimum than usual.

I'm sorry to hear that about your co-worker. It certainly sounds like something needs to be done, but that will be difficult if other people don't want to get involved.
